THE VENUE & COURT:

The Urban Beach at the Elmwood Club was once a bowling green but was destroyed in the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. Since then it has been filled with 900 tonnes of fresh sand. It is New Zealand’s number 1 beach handball venue.

 

The area can hold 2 full sized beach courts with clean, debris free sand and has a clubhouse attached with an upstairs bar open to participants.

The Elmwood Club is the home of many Christchurch sports clubs. During the tournament other clubs affiliated with Elmwood will showcase their sports. The weekend will be a community event and the gates will remain open for the entire 24 hours of the tournament. Security will provide safety around the venue during the hours of darkness.

 

DIRECTIONS:

Elmwood Park is in near the heart of Christchurch close to Papanui Road about 15 min walk from Christchurch CBD. A supermarket, restaurants and shops are within walking distance.

 

GETTING THERE:

From the airport, your team will be picked up and shuttled to your accommodation or venue. Canterbury Handball will assign you a local host to help you to get around and answer all your questions.

 

ACCOMMODATION

Due to the tournament being held over the Saturday night, the teams will only require accommodation for Friday and Sunday nights depending on travel arrangements. Canterbury Handball is working on accommodation options to help with these arrangements please advise us on your arrival and departure times.

 

FOOD:

For NZ$15 per person Canterbury Handball can provide a breakfast on the tournament Sunday. You can select your preferred choice at the time of registration.

Food stalls are available from 11 o’clock in the morning.

Water is available at any time.

 

TOURNAMENT INFO:

 Tournament Briefing and official opening on Saturday at 11am.

The tournament starts at 12 noon on Saturday and ends 24hrs later on Sunday.

 

There will be three categories

  • Women’s
  • Men’s
  • Social mixed

 

Each category will consist of a maximum of 5 teams. The tournament will be played in a round robin format with the top four finishing teams going through to semi-finals and finals.

 

Night games, from 10pm-6am, have been allocated a longer 1hour time slot to allow athletes sufficient rest.

 

Referees will be rostered into the draw to allow sufficient rest for those who are player/refs.

 

THE RULES:

Games will be officiated in accordance of the International Handball Federation Beach Handball rules. Score sheets will be handed to the tournament administration immediately after the game ends.

 

In event of a dispute Canterbury Handball will provide a Disciplinary and Dispute Committee.

 

THE UNIFORMS:

Each Team will be provided with one complete set of uniforms for the tournament. (This is included in the registration fee). These uniforms will be yours to keep and sizes can be chosen on the registration form.

 

THE TEAMS:

The men’s and women’s teams consists of maximum of 10 athletes.

The social mixed teams can have 10 athletes and must allow for 2 females to be present on court at all times.

 

Each team will name a minimum of 2 people to referee and teams will be asked to provide people for duty. These can be registered players and we will do our best to allow the officials sufficient rest time.

 

HEALTH AND SAFETY:

  • Alcohol is provided at the Venue, however this will be restricted and monitored. Misconduct by a single person will result in the disqualification of the entire team.
  • Before entering the clubhouse facilities, players must be clean and have appropriate footwear on.
  • There will be rest/sleeping areas and indoor/outdoor showers at the venue.
  • A Physio/First Aider will be on site to assist with minor injuries.
  • Sunscreen and water will be provided.

 

WEATHER:

There are no postponement dates for this tournament. This means despite the weather the tournament will go ahead rain or shine. Canterbury weather is unpredictable even in summer so we urge all athletes to bring appropriate clothing to keep warm and dry.

IMAGE/PERSONAL RIGHTS:

As a member of the New Zealand Handball Federation, Canterbury Handball Association is granted the right to use photos and other graphic materials of players and officials as well as team names, logos, uniforms etc. for promotion of the sport.

 

THE CODE OF CONDUCT:

The tournament director and organizing committee will act as the Disciplinary and Disputes Committee to decide on any dispute or disciplinary issue.
